CHAPTER 25

‘Is everybody ready?’ Prue asked looking around at the members of The Mother’s Day Club who, like her, had spent the morning at the village hall preparing for this afternoon’s social event.

‘As ready as we’ll ever be!’ Gloria called from beside the hoopla game which she was in charge of. ‘Open the doors and let ’em in.’

‘Stand back everyone, watch out for the stampede!’ Nancy added with a cheeky wink to Prue.

‘In that case…’ Prue headed for the door. ‘Let the social begin! Have a good time everyone.’ She opened the front door of the village hall and was pleased to see that a queue had formed outside. Not only were there evacuee mothers and their children waiting, but members of the village’s Women’s Institute and other local residents.

‘Welcome!’ Prue said, throwing the door wide. ‘Come in and enjoy yourselves.’
